Rottnest Island sits just offshore from the city of Perth, in Western Australia. A protected nature reserve, it’s home to the quokka, a small wallaby-like marsupial. White-sand beaches and secluded coves include the Basin, with its shallow waters, and Thomson Bay, the main hub and ferry port. A paradise for tourists (and I am not being paid by Tourism Australia).
However, tourist haven also means waste to manage. Secluded and offshore means waste is even harder and more costly to manage. So it does make sense to optimise this service and be able to monitor the level of waste in all the bins around the island so that you know when you need to come & empty them.
This is a perfect application for the Internet of Simple Things, aka Sigfox.
First, you need some IoT devices to retrofit the bins so that they can send data about the level of waste inside. PiPIoT LevelSense , Sigfox ready devices from New Zealand, were installed on the bins.
Second, you need network coverage. Thinxtra is building the Sigfox nationwide long range, low cost network and it just happened that Perth & Rottnest Island are already covered.
Third, you need to send data to a platform to receive alerts when bins are 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% full. In fact by default, the sensors already sends data once a day to provide the battery status and the bin filling level by default.
Now the bins are ready to talk and provide realtime information for a more optimised and on time service.
Thinxtra is empowering the Internet of Things in Asia Pacific by deploying the world-leading Sigfox LPWA network as well as building a full eco-system of IoT solutions and services to enable the non-connected to connect, to increase productivity, accelerate decision making, improve quality of service and quality of life, and find more economical solutions to common problems.
Sigfox is the world’s leading provider of connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT). The company has built a global network to connect billions of devices to the Internet while consuming as little energy as possible, as simply as possible. Sigfox’s unique approach to device-to-cloud communications addresses the three greatest barriers to global IoT adoption: cost, energy consumption, and global scalability.
